Supreme Council submits to Russia’s State Duma amendments to federal law on Russian citizenship

MPs propose to adopt a preferential procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship

Tiraspol, 10 April. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The Supreme Council of the PMR has initiated and submitted to the State Duma its amendments to Russia's federal law on citizenship. The parliament's vice speaker, Galina Antyfeyeva, spoke about them during a public hearing in the State Duma on 20 March.

In particular, the Pridnestrovian side proposes to grant a preferential access to Russian citizenship for people in conflict zones without observing permanent residence qualifications and dual citizenship prohibition. According to Pridnestrovian lawmakers, this approach does not contradict Russia's status as a conflict mediator and the USSR's successor.

Also, MPs have put forth an initiative to withdraw the requirement to provide a non-citizenship certificate, the Supreme Council's press service reports.

Galina Antyufeyeva noted the need to improve the content of the legal concept «compatriots». This may give rise to applying eased citizenship requirements to them. Knowledge of the Russian language verified by a secondary or higher education certificate may be an additional factor for simplified citizenship procedures.

Russian citizens living abroad face other problems as well. For example, it is difficult to spend the so-called maternity capital outside Russia, even in compliance with the law. In this connection, Pridnestrovian MPs have also drafted amendments to the federal law «On additional measures of state support for families with children» involving the possibility of spending the maternity capital in Pridnestrovie.

It is hoped that these amendments will be studied and taken into account by State Duma members.
