Oleg Serebryan called customs duties for Pridnestrovie “positive discrimination” and “suffocation”

The Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova made this recognition during a meeting of political representatives of the PMR and Moldova in Tiraspol

Tiraspol, January 18. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Moldovan duties are asphyxia (suffocation). This recognition was made by Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova Oleg Serebrian during a meeting of political representatives of the PMR and the RM, held on January 16 in Tiraspol. Although publically, when communicating with journalists, he used a different term – “positive discrimination”. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR Vitaly Ignatiev told the First Pridnestrovian TV Channel about this.

“We have not received any clear explanations from the Moldovan side. The phrase “positive discrimination” was used by my counterpart when communicating with journalists, but at our meeting he called these duties “asphyxia,” Vitaly Ignatiev said.

The term "asphyxia" means "suffocation", literally: absence of a pulse.

“Double taxation, double duties are a blow to the economy, it’s a blow to people, it’s an additional social and humanitarian burden and, in fact, it’s a form of economic pressure that can develop into larger scale forms, in the form of an economic war. Therefore, we, of course, warned the Moldovan side against aggravating the situation in this area and demanded the abolition of these duties, which are illegitimate from any point of view,” Ignatiev said.

On January 16, a meeting of political representatives of the PMR and RM Vitaly Ignatiev and Oleg Serebryan was held in Tiraspol. The main topic was customs duties on Pridnestrovian exports and imports introduced by Moldova from January 1, 2024. According to preliminary data from the State Customs Committee of the PMR, damage to Pridnestrovie could amount to $16 million a year. One of the consequences of these duties will be price increase.
