Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia: Tiraspol and Chisinau are opposite in approaches to the problem of the political status of the PMR

Sergey Gubarev is sure that today it is necessary to adhere to the tactics of small steps and solve practical issues that facilitate the lives of people

Tiraspol, December 27./Novosti Pridnestrovya/. It is impossible to resolve the Moldo-Pridnestrovian conflict without solving the issue of the political status of Pridnestrovie, but Tiraspol and Chisinau have different approaches to this problem. This was stated in an interview with TASS by the Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the representative of Russia in the negotiation process between the PMR and the RM, Sergey Gubarev.

As an argument, he cited the Law of the RM of 2005 “On the Status of Settlements on the Left Bank of the Dniester” and the results of the Pridnestrovian referendum of 2006.

“These two documents denote two diametrically opposite points in approaches to the solution of the Pridnestrovian problem. On the one hand, it is such a limited autonomy, and on the other – full independence and international legal personality with subsequent integration into the Russian Federation,” Gubarev said.

The Russian diplomat stressed that “it is impossible to ignore these documents if no one officially cancelled them”.

Gubarev is sure that today it is necessary to adhere to the tactics of small steps and to solve practical issues that facilitate the lives of people. At the same time, he noted with regret that so far in this sphere “there is backsliding”.

The Russian diplomat also stressed the achievement of a long-term viable political Moldo-Pridnestrovian settlement was possible only with the approval of the population of both the left and right banks of the Dniester.

It should be recalled, the seventh referendum was held in Pridnestrovie, in 2006. The 97.2% of its participants voted for independence and integration with Russia (the turnout was 78.6%).

The results of the referendum were recognized by the State Duma of the Russian Federation.

“The State Duma believes that the Russian Federation should build its policy taking into account the free expression of the will of the people of Pridnestrovie,” the State Duma said in the statement “On the results of the referendum in Pridnestrovie on September 17, 2006”.

The document states that this referendum has been held in full compliance with international legal norms and legislation of Pridnestrovie.

“The results of the referendum in Pridnestrovie should be fully taken into account by the international community in order to ensure human rights, peace and security in this region and a just resolution of the Pridnestrovian conflict,” it is stressed in the resolution of the State Duma of the Russian Federation of October 6, 2006.
