Tiraspol, October, 26. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The EU extended the sanctions for the Pridnestrovie leadership until October 31, 2019. The Decree will become effective the next day after publication in the Official Journal. Sanctions were imposed for “the lack of progress in Pridnestrovian settlement” in 2003. The Council`s decision was commented by the Pridnestrovie Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In Pridnestrovie Foreign Service the European Union Council`s decision was described as “counterproductive, obsolete and inconsistent with reality”.
“In the context of the moratorium extended from 2010 such a formalist approach seems inappropriate on the practical application of these restrictions” – as the report indicates.
The Pridnestrovie Ministry of Foreign Affairs sees no reason for taking such an inertial decision based on assessment of the situation 15 years ago. In this regard, diplomats note that Pridnestrovie consistently complies with the provisions of the Protocol Decision on the basis of functioning schools with teaching on the Latin script, which fixed the optimal conditions for the activities of these schools, signed on November 25, 2017.
The ministry believes that this step of the EU Council can be explained by the lack of proper coordination between the relevant European authorities, since it is known that all international participants in the “5+2” format, including the European Union, welcomed the signing of the Protocol Decision and the progress made in this area.
“We take the situation as an unfortunate misunderstanding, and urge the Council of the European Union to abandon the inertial approach, which prevent constructive practices strengthening in the process of settling Moldovan-Pridnestrovian relations and undermines the authority of the EU as an observer in the “5+2” consultative format.
In the near future the Foreign Ministry of Pridnestrovie will send to the appropriate European structures relevant notes with an appeal to settle this situation as soon as possible.
