Moldova's parliament speaker: Moldova to seek Russian troops withdrawal

This was said by Andrian Candu in an interview with journalists

The speaker of the Moldovan parliament, Andrian Candu, said that with the support of international organisations Moldova "will seek the withdrawal of Russian troops from Pridnestrovie." He said that in an interview with a Brazilian outlet, Infotag reports.

"Since 1992 Moldova has been under constant diplomatic pressure from Russia. Moscow demanded that Moldova should make a number of concessions in exchange for the settlement of the Pridnestrovian conflict. Despite the fact Moldova has accepted many compromises over the past 25 years, Russia has not yet withdrawn its military from Pridnestrovie. In this situation, Moldova will seek closer partnership with international institutions so that they will exert pressure on the Kremlin and obtain the withdrawal of troops," underscored Candu.

According to him, one of such measures will be the forthcoming opening of the NATO Liaison Office in Kishinev.

The speaker expressed the hope that "Moldova will reach an agreement with Russia on the withdrawal of its troops from the left bank territory for further reunification and strengthening of relations with the European Union."

In September 2017 the Moldovan prime minister, Pavel Filip, requested the UN General Assembly to include in the agenda of the 72nd session "the issue of withdrawal of the foreign military from Pridnestrovie." However, this proposal by Moldova was rejected.

The Moldovan foreign ministry later announces that this issue "is placed among additional questions of the General Assembly's agenda and will be considered during an October session." On 23 October, the UN General Assembly made a decision to postpone this issue indefinitely.

Pridnestrovie requested the UN to admit it as an observer. As Pridnestrovian President Vadim Krasnoselsky said last week, "the addressee has received the request and considering it."
