Krasnoselsky: 'Why light a fuse which may lead to an explosion after 25 years of peaceful coexistence of Pridnestrovie, Moldova and Ukraine?'

The Pridnestrovian president has commented on the official inauguration of a joint Moldo-Ukrainian customs post Pervomaysk-Kuchurgan

Tiraspol, 17 July. /Novosti pridnestrovya/. President Krasnoselsky has commented on the official inauguration, with the direct participation of Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, of a join Moldo-Ukrainian customs post Pervomaysk-Kuchurgan, the president's press service reports.

«Pridnestroviс continues to consider these actions as unilateral, as attempts to put our exports and imports, as well as the movement of our citizens across the Pridnestrovian-Ukrainian border, under full control. I recall that there are previous agreements, the right of Pridnestrovie to carry out economic activities and citizens' right to free movement. Of course, this post has violated all previous agreements. In addition, decisions made on 2−3 June in the '5+2' meeting show that all contentious issues should be resolved only at the negotiating table," said the president.

According to him, a decision to establish this post was made behind Tiraspol's back, without any agreement on this matter.

«I don't know, maybe earlier — in 2015−2016 — there were some negotiations and agreements, but this issue has not been discussed with me personally, as well as with any of my colleagues. This, of course, is worrying us," noted Vadim Krasnoselsky.

The head of state underscored that he did not share the «optimism of the leadership of Moldova and Ukraine who claim everything will be all right," because Pridnestrovie would incur some losses.

«It may be all right for someone, but not for Pridnestrovians, of course. Let's have a look at the functionality of these crossing posts. Note there are fiscal posts with specific instructions. They must act on regulations, in compliance with Moldovan law, which will infringe the rights and freedoms of our citizens, our economic entities," said the president.

Vadim Krasnoselsky recalled that Pridnestrovie had approached all mediators, observers and guarantors of the «5+2» negotiation process. The president had sent letters to all foreign ministers of EU countries, and those letters had taken effect.

«Many western politicians have said that there is some reason in our words, that it is not as straightforward and simple as presented by Moldova. They understand this issue needs to be further studied, needs a special approach. There is a clear understanding among Western politicians that this does not affect economic schemes, that this is a purely political step, a political decision. In this case, there are attempts to integrate politics with the economy. As practice shows, this is always wrong and never produces positive results. Let alone the fact that Moldova's military component appears to be deployed along the Pridnestrovian border, which also does not add to the optimism of our relationship," underscored the president.

«After the 1992 conflict the military components of Pridnestrovie and Moldova were divided by Russian peacekeepers. This mission has been functioning for 25 years, and there have been no problems. And now they will be in direct contact. If there hadn't been any conflict, there might be no problems, but there was the conflict, and it has not been resolved. And under these conditions, the posts are being established… The officials who have generated and promoted this idea are probably thinking of an escalation of the conflict. Why do it? Why light a fuse which may lead to an explosion after 25 years of peaceful coexistence of Pridnestrovie, Moldova and Ukraine?

Moldova does not want to discuss this issue in the '5+2' format, arguing this is an internal affair of Ukraine and Moldova. But there cannot be any internal unilateral issues in a conflict zone. All issues should be resolved at the negotiating table. We choose this path and hope for the guarantors, primarily Russia, because Ukraine appears to have sided with one conflicting party. The only thing we can rely on is common sense," concluded Krasnoselsky.
