Russia's State Duma set to adopt statement on Pridnestrovie

The document is urging the authorities of Moldova and Ukraine to reject all forms of pressure on Pridnestrovie and insisting on the speedy holding of the next round of negotiations in the "5+2" format.

Russian lawmakers have acknowledged some serious negative trends in the development of the political situation around Pridnestrovie and the region's economic situation as a whole.

The Council of the the State Duma is to consider the chamber's draft statement «On negative trends in the development of the situation around Pridnestrovie in connection with the actions of the authorities of Moldova and Ukraine» in order to include it in the agenda of its nearest plenary meeting, Parlamentsakaya Gazeta reports.

The statement has been drafted by the State Duma's committee on CIS countries, Euraisan integration and compatriots affairs. The draft notes the existence of some serious negative trends if the development of the political situation around Pridnestrovie and the region's socio-economic situation as a whole. The current situation, cuased by the actions of the authorities of Moldova and Ukraine, poses a real threat to the region's stability, to the welfare and security of Pridnestrovian inhabitants, including over 200,000 Russian citizens living there, which is a matter of deep concern to the State Duma.

«Without prior discussion with Tiraspol, Moldova and Ukraine have established joint border and customs posts on the Pridnestrovian sector of the Moldo-Ukrainian border, which is contrary to the agreements on the unacceptability of any action aimed at restricting the freedom of economic activities of enterprises and individuals in the region, of any steps that might aggravate the situation of each conflicting party, as well as any attempts impose a blockade on Pridnestrovie," the document particularly says.

Earlier, Pridnestrovian President Krasnoselsky said in an interview with Parlamentskaya Gazeta that the rapprochement between the Dniester's right and left banks had stalled.

«The Pridnestrovian side is rady to move forward. We have made five specific transparent steps. There are no reciprocal steps on the part of Moldova: problems remain unresolved; the settlement remains 'frozen'. We hear nothing but fine words so far and see no deeds," said Krasnoselsky. In addition, the president believes that there are processes «aimed at ousting Russia and Pridnerstrovie from the negotiating process," which is absolutely unacceptable.

The State Duma's draft statement is urging the authorities of Moldova and Ukraine to reject any forms of pressure on Pridnestrovie and any attempts to blockade it.

The draft also touches upon the peacekeeping operation in the region. In particular, the State Duma says there is no alternative to the current peacekeeping mission in Pridnestrovie and condemns any unilateral calls to cease it or review its current format, as well as any action against the stable work of the Joint Control Commission.

«The State Duma insists on the speedy conduct of the next round of negotiations on the platform of the 'Permanent Conference…' («5+2» format) and considers that attempts to replace it with any other formats are unacceptable," reads the draft statement.

If adopted, the draft will be sent to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, the Supreme Council of Pridnestrovie and Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada.
