Zatulin: Moldovan politicians have a common desire to gain a one-way advantage in dealing with Pridnestrovie

According to Russia's State Duma member, only unresolved conflict with the PMR prevents Moldova from "falling" into Romania.

When it comes to Pridnestrovie, Moldovan politicians have a common desire to gain a unilateral advantage, to push it against the will of the Pridnestrovian people into some scheme from which the country will not be able to escape,

the first deputy chairman of the State Duma's committee for CIS affairs and compatriots, Konstantin Zatulin, said in an interview with Pravda.ru.

He cited as an example the introduction of foreign trade certificates during the presidency of Vladimir Voronin, which forced all Pridnestrovian enterprises to register as Moldovan exporters and importers.

«This was done in violation of previous agreements. Russia overlooked this fact. We did this because we placed too many hopes on Voronin: we thought there was nothing wrong with that. And today it backfires on Pridnestrovie and us," said the MP.

The lawmaker expressed concern about the position of the current Moldovan president, who openly supports the blockade measures against Pridnestrovie.

«I am concerned about the position of the new forces. President Dodon visited Moscow on 9 May and then the St Petersburg Economic Forum. And on 23 May, in an interview with a European radio station, he expressed support for the new blockade measures imposed on Pridnestrovie in the form of joint checkpoints at the Ukrainian border. That is, there is an attempt to block Pridnestrovie not only from their own side, but also to take advantage of Ukraine's current attitude towards this issue in order to create unbearable conditions for the people in the region," said the Russian politician.

According to Zatulin, Moldova's problem is that the survival of such political forces as the Socialist Party, which promoted Dodon to the presidency, requires a comprehensive compromise with Pridnestrovie.

«Steps should be made to narrow the differences. Because the formula for the future of Moldova depends directly on whether the sides reach an agreement or not," Zatulin believes.

Only unresolved conflict with the PMR prevents Moldova from «falling» into Romania, he concluded.
