Ukraine bans transit of food products through its border with Pridnestrovie since 20 May

This was announced at today's meeting of Pridnestrovie's Security Council

Tiraspol, 19 May. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Ukraine puts a ban on the transit of food products through its border with Pridnestrovie since 20 May, agricultural minister Efimiy Koval announced during today's Security Council meeting.

According to him, yesterday the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the PMR received a letter from Ukraine's veterinary and phytosanitary service notifying of transit prohibition.

The letter also says that the transit of such cargoes to Pridnestrovie through Ukraine will be carried out only in consultation with Moldova's National Agency for Food Security.

The ban, the letter notifies, has been initiated by the General Directorate of Counterintelligence Protection of National Economic Interests of the SBU. According to the Ukrainian counterintelligence authorities, this decision is aimed at «localising national security threats».

Previously issued permits for the transit of food products to Pridnestrovie through Ukrainian territory will be considered null and void since 20 May. Meanwhile, according to Efimiy Koval, 83 applications for the transit of goods subject to phytosanitary and veterinary control have been filed in 2017. Over 6,000 tonnes of food has been transported through the Ukrainian-Pridnestrovian border this year.

«The problem is very serious given our dependence on foreign food manufacturers," noted the minister.

According to Efimiy Koval, the ban may apply not only to the food supplied through Ukrainian territory but also to the products produced in Ukraine.
