Russian expert: Intervention of the West impeded settlement of the conflict on Dniester

According to the political expert Sergey Markedonov, Kozak's plan was a chance of reconciliation between RM and PMR

Tiraspol, March 3. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Intervention of the West buried an idea of peaceful settlement on the Dniester. Russian political expert Sergey Markedonov declared it in an interview to Sputnik Moldova implying the pressure put upon the leadership of Moldova at that time as they refused to sign the Kozak Plan at the last moment.

«Over the period between 1992 when the Ceasefire Agreement had been signed and 2003 when the Kozak Plan failed, there were many documents, practices and meetings devoted to the settlement. I think that all this is worth studying from the perspective of history at least, we should understand that the parties moved to some decision. And it could be a compromise decision, not a victory of Tiraspol or Chisinau, but a certain compromise. And it was that failure which suspended the settlement of the conflict," the expert considers.

According to Markedonov, it will be very difficult to return the circumstance of 2003 now.

«It is impossible to see a conflict settlement as a cure-all. There was a chance. The sides were very close, literally, within a stone's throw from reconciliation. Then there was a failure. But now it will be extremely difficult to return to it," — the political expert noted.
