Russian expert: Declaration of the OSCE Ministerial Council concerning the special status of the PMR is no more than a statement

Vasily Kashirin: Only Pridnestrovians can determine fate of the republic

Tiraspol, December 6. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. A declaration with proposal of a special status for Pridnestrovie to beacome a part of Moldova was approved at the weekend during the meeting of the OSCE Ministerial Council in Belgrade. It is also emphasized in the document that peaceful process is possible in the region only on the basis of territorial integrity of the RM.

In interview to the Novosti Pridnestrovya, the senior research associate of the Russian Institute of Strategic Researches (RISR) Vasily Kashirin emphasizes that such statements shouldn't be taken seriously in Pridnestovie, they are just declarative.

«Presidency of the OSCE changes, it transfers from Serbia to Germany. In some sense, previous president had to report on the results of his activity, including on the Pridnestrovian direction which was declared as one of the OSCE's priorities in general. And, as we know, there wasn't even slightest progress neither in the political settlement, nor in the resolution of social and economic problems (editor's note — between Pridnestrovie and Moldova). That's why they made this declaration introducing nothing new in the agenda," the Russian expert thinks.

According to Vasily Kashirin, the most reasonable step for both Russia and Pridnestrovie is not to respond to this declaration in any way, because official position of both Moscow and Tiraspol on settlement of the Moldovan-Pridnestrovian conflict has been already voiced more than once.

«It is known that, on the technical level, Russia through its diplomats recognizes territorial integrity of the RM. At that, we also know the Russian President's viewpoint frequently repeated by him that only Pridnestrovians themselves can determine fate of the republic," the expert emphasized.

He noted that there was no capable government in Moldova these days. That's why one mustn't say that Moldova is ready for some dialogue and development of new game rules or for providing Pridnestrovie with a new status which could satisfy Pridnestrovie potentially.

«Threat to Pridnestrovie's security doesn't come from such declarations given that OSCE is in the difficult times in terms of the goal-setting. For many people its functioning is less and less clear," Vasily Kashirin concluded.
