Tour and inspection: the President's visit to the PSU archaeological museum

A femur of a little mammoth found during excavations in Rashkovo in 2014, which lived in our region several thousand years ago; a grain bin (a vessel for storing grain), which was used in the fifth millennium BC; to the surprise of experts, a perfectly preserved skeleton of a warrior who died a couple of millennia BC - these and many other exhibits attracted the attention of Vadim Krasnoselsky today. The President visited the new PSU archaeological museum. The head of the Archaeology research laboratory Vitaly Sinika acted as a tour guide.

The President inspected not only the exposition, but also the working premises of the museum, created on the initiative and with the support of Vadim Krasnoselsky. He once insisted that the rich funds, constantly replenished due to successful archaeological excavations, should be open and accessible to the public. A decision was made to create a full-fledged museum at the state university. The choice of the site is related to the active work of the university's research laboratory. The Archaeology research laboratory was created in 1992. The employees were allocated one auditorium in building "A" then. They held lectures here, conducted scientific work, stored artifacts. A small exposition was set up there five years later, and excursions began. The compactness of the premises did not fit in with the volume of material and the tasks performed. Having got into the state capital investment program, the museum moved to building B and occupied 420 square meters there. An exhibition hall was arranged, equipped with a multimedia projector, allowing not only excursions, but also lectures, screenings of educational films. Two rooms with a total area of 94 square meters were allocated for storage facilities. They are equipped with a special ventilation and air conditioning system. It remains to install the shelves. There is a laboratory for primary conservation of finds and a restoration laboratory, for which 12 stainless steel tables were ordered. A separate entrance has been thought out for the delivery of new archaeological finds. Of no small importance is the presence of a shower, which the employees of the research laboratory can use upon arrival from excavations, the President was told.

The interlocutors discussed options for further filling and design of the museum. The President suggested, for example, filling the empty walls with information stands so that visitors could obtain information without a guide or lecturer. Vitaly Sinika in turn voiced the idea of placing portraits of outstanding personalities who made a significant contribution to the development of archeology.

It was noted that interest in the museum and the demand for excursions are great. Two other university museums, opened quite recently, as well as the observatory and planetarium, are also actively visited. All these objects acquired a modern look as part of the global renovation of the infrastructure of PSU named after Shevchenko. The major university renovation was started on the orders of Vadim Krasnoselsky and has been ongoing for several years now.
