Tiraspol, November 25. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first elections to the Pridnestrovian Parliament. On September 2, 1990, at the 2nd Extraordinary Congress of Deputies of all levels, not only the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic was proclaimed, but the Provisional Supreme Council was also established.
Then this body performed mixed functions of the legislative and executive branches of Government. The deputies made the main decisions involved with the life of the young republic. Almost three months later, elections to the permanent Supreme Council were held.
“November 25 was the day of the elections. Election commissions and polling places were urgently formed. Everything took place on an emotional and patriotic upsurge. The main electoral system was the same as in the Soviet Union. There was no queue to be a deputy. Those, who wanted to go to promote interests of electorate turned to the Joint Council of Workers’ Association for a guarantee of security. People were afraid for their families above all. People went to the Supreme Council not for glory, profit, but to protect their people, family, native land from the impending arbitrariness of the of Moldova’s nationalism” the press service of the Parliament quotes the deputy of the Provisional Supreme Council, the Supreme Council of the 1st convocation Vladimir Emelyanov.
After the elections, on November 29, 1990, the first meeting of the session of the 1st convocation took place. From that day, the countdown of the work of the legislative body of the young state began.
On the day before the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Council, the deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council Mikhail Burla addressed his colleagues- deputies at a plenary session today.
“Thanks to the Supreme Council, we are the law-governed state. A systematic legislative package has been created, beginning with the Constitution, the adoption of various codes of laws, and ending with specialized laws. We have a full legal framework, like a sovereign state. Therefore, the work of the Supreme Council is in fact the establishment and functioning of our state,” Mikhail Burla noted.
