LEONID MANAKOV IN UN ABOUT LIMITING PRIDNESTROVIANS’ RIGHTS BY RM AUTHORITIES

According to the head of the PMR Official Representation in the Russian Federation, it is unacceptable to gloss this situation over

Tiraspol, July, 11. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Leonid Manakov, Head of the PMR Official Representation in the Russian Federation, took part in the 41st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. The diplomat made a presentation on “Human Rights as the Basis for the Development of Cooperation between Pridnestrovie and the United Nations”.

In his speech, he noted that Pridnestrovie was a modern European country that firmly adhered to the principles of open and honest cooperation with the UN.

“In an effort to create a truly legal state, Pridnestrovie has recognized the rule of law and fulfills all basic international treaties, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenants on Civil and Political, Economic, Social and Cultural Rights for 30 years,” the diplomat emphasized.

Leonid Manakov also said that the United Nations appreciated the efforts of Pridnestrovie in protecting and safeguarding human rights, including in the context of the consistent implementation of Thomas Hammarberg`s recommendations, the United Nations Senior Expert on Human Rights in Pridnestrovie.

“5 years after his first visit to the republic in 2012, Mr. Hammarberg stated that Pridnestrovie had seriously advanced on the main UN recommendations in the field of human rights. We can talk about promotion of 20 of 38 recommendations,” Leonid Manakov said.

According to him, the UN support is extremely important for the republic due to systemic restrictions on the rights of Pridnestrovians due to the presence of an unresolved conflict with the Republic of Moldova.

“Moldovan authorities restrict the rights of Pridnestrovians to freedom of movement, personal security and integrity, labor and entrepreneurial initiative, education and choice of profession, foreign economic activity and communication with the outside world,” the Head of the PMR Representative Office said.

“In these conditions, long-term cooperation with the UN allows Pridnestrovie to be open to the whole world and convey the truth about how the rights of the Pridnestrovian people are criminally limited to the authorities of the neighboring country. It is unacceptable that in the 21st century the international community would shamefully gloss over the situation around the half-million population of a democratic European country,” Leonid Manakov said.

The Head of the Official Representative office of the PMR in the Russian Federation called on the UN to further expand its contacts with Pridnestrovie. According to Leonid Manakov, a good impetus in this work could be securing a special observer status for the UN to Pridnestrovie, forming a group for interaction with Pridnestrovie at the UN and creating a UN resource center in the republic.

“On behalf of Pridnestrovie, I declare that our country is open to the closest cooperation with all United Nations structures. I am convinced that our goodwill and genuine desire to be part of the world community must be heard,” Leonid Manakov concluded.
