UN expert assessed state of Tiraspol's detention facility

After Thomas Hammarberg's last visit, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has implemented a package of measures to improve the conditions of detention

Tiraspol, 29 May. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The temporary detention facility of the Tiraspol Department of Internal Affairs has been visited by the UN senior expert on human rights in Pridnestrovie, Thomas Hammarberg, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reports.

"Observance of human rights is our top priority. We have nothing to hide, and we are open to international experts," stressed Minister of Internal Affairs Ruslan Mova.

Based on the results of Thomas Hammarberg's previous visit in 2013, a report was published that contained a number of guidelines on the organization of life and medical care for detainees.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs notes that they have taken into account the expert's opinion and have already implemented a set of measures to improve the conditions of detention in the facility. The bathrooms and showers have been repaired; the lighting has been made brighter; the medical assistants of all the territorial subdivisions have passed refresher courses. Major repairs of detention facilities have been carried out in the departments of internal affairs of Kamenka, Dubossary and Grigoriopol districts.

Thomas Hammarberg personally communicated with the detainees. Ruslan Mova drew the expert's attention to the security system installed in the facility, which is achieved, among other things, through video surveillance and video information storage.

Thomas Hammarberg thanked Ruslan Mova for the meeting and the replies he received.
