Experts: Pridnestrovie makes another important step towards recognition

Vladimir Yastrebchak and Igor Shornikov commented on a resolution adopted in Moscow confirming the PMR's right to international recognition

Tiraspol, 22 Novemeber. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. A resolution confirming Pridnestrovie's right to international recognition, which was adopted during the international round table conference "The political and legal grounds for international recognition of the PMR" was the main topic of the Question of the Day show on the Pridnestrovian TV.

According to the former foreign minister, Vladimir Yastrebchak, political sufficiency and security provision are important for international recognition.

"To build relations with Russia, it is sufficient for us now to have the status of a party to the conflict, recognised by Russia, which is a guarantor state and a peacemaker. We'd like to achieve recognition, especially after it was confirmed one more time that there are grounds for that," he said,

The resolution adopted in Moscow is another important step Pridnestrovie has made towards recognition, the ex-minister believes.

"We are returning to the information space of the Russian Federation; we are talked about as an entity, a state having historical, political and legal grounds and arguments. It is very important to know and remember. I think this will make good material for all those who are ready to hear us," siad Yastrebchak.

The director of the Institute for Socio-Political Research, Igor Shornikov, thinks that Pridnestrovie has its own path of development, which will differ from the examples of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Crimea.

"I'm sure the situation in Pridnestrovie will not follow the examples of the past; we have our own way. It is possible and necessary to declare our intention to achieve international recognition at any venues and especially such an influential organisation as the UN. But there is no need to expect early recognition in our current circumstances. But that does not mean we should join either Moldova or Ukraine, as some propose. We must wait for the geopolitical climate to change," Shornikov believes.

He recalled that a "5+2" format meeting would be held again at the end of November.

"But is not the format within which Pridnestrovie can achieve recognition. Perhaps it is necessary to think about creating alternative formats. A recent letter to the UN requesting this organisation to grant special observer status to Pridnestrovie. Maybe, this is the way that will lead to a better solution. But it is not correct to dwell on the same format," concluded Shornikov.

The resolution adopted in Moscow was signed legal experts and representatives of Russia's legal community.  Conference participants, among whom were representatives of Russian and Pridnestrovian authorities, lawyers, historians, political scientists, public figures, analysed legal documents, historical context and the international and regional situation and expressed their general opinion on the phenomenon of the Pridnestrovian statehood.

The document notes that Pridnestrovie's statehood and independence were proclaimed in full compliance with the fundamental instruments of international law.

Another conclusion is that Moldova does not have relevant historical, political and legal grounds to claim the territory of Pridnestrovie as it is Moldova that refused the Pridnestrovian territory in1991 after which the PMR realised its legitimate right to self-determination.
