Tiraspol, 26 October. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. A training seminar on ensuring the rights of disabled citizens was held in Tiraspol. The event was organised by Pridnestrovie's foreign ministry and the UN Office for Human Rights. Dedicated specialists from the Healthcare Ministry, Ministry of Public Education, Ministry of Social Security and Labour, heads of social security organisations and Supreme Council members took part in it.
"We can't treat disabled people simply as people diagnosed with illnesses. We try to show that all people are equal, regardless of whether there are any restrictions between them," said the project coordinator, a representative of the UN Office for Human Rights, Alexander Stratulat.
It was noted during the seminar that about 20,000 disabled people live in our country. They are entitled to a number of benefits under the law. There are day-care facilities for disabled children and rehabilitation centres in the country. The training participants were told that it was necessary to establish efficient interaction between all organisations involved to make the lives of disabled people better, the Supreme Council's press service reports.
The MP, representing Dubossary, Petr Pasat told journalists there was a social organisation in the city which had successfully worked for five years, conducting with Russia's support a creative festival for children studying at specialized rehabilitative institutions. This event aims to help such children self-realise and socialise.
"Unfortunately, insufficient attention has been given to these issues due to the country's difficult economic situation. We are grateful to all organisations that provide financial support, procure equipment for specialised facilities. I'm sure that these seminars, which are designed for authorities, heads of specialised facilities, are informative and useful," believes Pasat.
These seminars have been held in our country since 2016. The programme has been developed on the basis of a report by UN senior human rights expert Thomas Hammarberg.
