Foreign minister: UN can exert positive influence on Moldo-Pridnestrovian settlement

The Supreme Council had approved a text of Pridnestrovie's appeal to the UN

Tiraspol, 20 September. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Pridnestrovie will request the United Nations to pay attention to the violation of the rights and interests of the country's population by Moldova. Tiraspol also proposes to form a working group on the Moldo-Pridnestrovian conflict and grant the PMR a special status at the UN. These are the main aspects of Pridnestrovie's appeal to the UN that has been approved today by the Supreme Council.

"The UN is a competent and responsible organisation which is сapable of exerting positive and stabilising influence on the process of the Moldo-Pridnestrovian settlement," the foreign minister, Vitaly Ignatyev, said at a parliamentary session.

He also noted that our chances of being heard were very high as Pridnestrovie is a party to the international negotiating process in the "5+2" format. The diplomat underscored that appealing to the UN did not mean replacing the existing international format.

"This appeal does not mean to replace the current negotiating mechanism. But, unfortunately, it has not worked for over 15 months. We need to draw broad international attention to the violation of the rights and legitimate interests of Pridnestrovians," noted Ignatyev.

Pridnestrovian President Vadim Krasnoselsky earlier announced the country's intention to appeal to the UN with a request to grant the status of UN observer to the PMR. Pridnestrovie also asked Russia to convey its position to the UN.

After the text had been signed by the president and the speaker, it will be sent to the UN General Secretary and the Chairman of the UN General Assembly, whose 72nd session is being held in New York.
