Parliaments of Pridnestrovie and Gagauzia sign cooperation agreement

This document will give new impetus to the relationship between the Supreme Council and the People's Assembly, which was first legally enshrined in March 2012

Tiraspol, 5 July. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. To strengthen good-neighbourly relations between Pridnestrovie and Gagauzia and exchange the experience of legislative work was the aim of today's signing of a cooperation agreement between the Supreme Council and the People's Assembly. The document was signed by the heads of the two legislatures, Alexander Scherba and Vladimir Kyssa.

«We hope the interparliamentary ties will improve Gagauzia's legislative base. We will learn something from Pridnestrovie, and Pridnestrovie will borrow something from us," said the Gagauzian MP.

In turn, Alexander Scherba said that the expansion of contacts, including interparliamentary links, would benefit the peoples of Pridnestrovie and Gagauzia.

To see how draft laws are considered and debated in the Supreme Council, the Gagauzian delegation took part in a plenary session. The Gagauzian MPs were satisfied with the work of their Pridnestrovian colleagues.

«We liked the way you hold plenary sessions. Each MP can express his opinion, which is a normal democratic process. We also allow everyone to express his opinion to avoid a one-sided debate," noted Kyssa.

Alexander Tarnavsky, representing Tiraspol's twin city of Comrat in the Assembly, spoke about draft laws Gagauzian lawmakers were working on to further submit them to the Moldovan parliament for consideration.

«The powers of the Gagauzian autonomy have been narrowed. Unfortunately, we have a lot of common competencies, overlapping at the central and regional levels, so we sometimes do not know where our powers begin and where they end. Therefore, we'll proceed now to the stage of distributing and detailing these powers with the Republic of Moldova in order to know the limits of our powers. So we are interested in your legislative experience. There is much to learn from you," noted the Gagauzian MP.

The chairman of the Supreme Council. Alexander Scherba, assured the Gagauzian colleagues that Pridnestrovian legislators were ready to cooperate and that the relationship between the two parliaments would be substantive.

«Together with our Gagauzian brothers we are building integration procedures enabling the economies of our countries to interact with Russia. In the area of economic development, in addition to relations at the level of parliaments, we are also going to establish the same intensive contacts at the level of the executive authorities as we currently have at the level of municipalities," said Scherba.

The Pridnestrovian speaker was invited to visit Gagauzia on Comrat's City Day. «Our MPs are traditionally invited to take part in this holiday. And this year is no exception because our contacts are not formal but built on a friendly — heart to heart — basis," said Scherba.

After signing the cooperation agreement, the Gagauzian delegation and Pridnestrovian MPs laid flowers at Tirapol's Glory Memorial.

The first cooperation agreement between the Supreme Council of the PMR and the People's Assembly of Gagauzia was signed on 29 March 2012.
