Vitaly Ignatyev: they are playing hide-and-seek with Pridnestrovie

According to the foreign minister, it is evident that both Moldova and Ukraine have no persuasive arguments to support the fact that their joint customs posts will lead to a positive result

Tiraspol, 20 April. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The issue of organising joint Moldo-Ukrainian control along the Pridnestrovian border dates back to November 2015. From this point on, Pridnestrovie has had a clearly specific position which is based on the inadmissibility of such control measures as it contradicts the negotiating arrangements. This is what Vitaly Ignatyev said in an interview with the First Pridnestrovian TV channel.

According to him, such activities by Kishinev and Kiev will entail an entire combination of negative consequences in the economic and security spheres, as well as in the area of free movement for both people and goods.

«I think the forces that initiate such processes try to ignore the objective reality that Pridnestrovie controls its borders, that there is a conflict, that there exist diplomatic and political measures to settle this conflict," said Ignatyev. «This position is that there are attempts to portray the installation of posts as certain bilateral relations between Moldova and Ukraine, which I believe is beyond any criticism and reality.»

The minister also expressed his doubts that «someone had ever calculated possible scenarios in case of establishing such posts» and recalled that the Moldovan side refused to share any information with Pridnestrovie, including about the scheme this post will employ.

«Not to mention that some parameters could be discussed because Pridnestrovie is not ready in principle to discuss the issue of post installation," added Ignatyev.

According to him, they are playing a game of hide-and-seek with Pridnestrovie and the very attempt by the initiators of this decision to withdraw from the substantive dialogue answers many questions.

«Obviously, the counterparties have nothing to say; they have no persuasive arguments to support the fact that joint posts will lead to a positive result. Therefore, at the political, media and expert levels they are playing hide-and-seek with Pridnestrovie. Those international participants who are responsible for the general situation under international law and the negotiating arrangements are simply trying to either hide or turn the blind eye, thinking they are invisible, and so are their responsibility," said Ignatyev.

In that regard, the minister assured that the republic would continue to insist on the inadmissibility of this decision as it could have unpredictable negative consequences.

«We'll do our best to prevent the establishment of these posts through political and diplomatic methods. This includes the widest possible awareness of our international partners, the address that has been sent on behalf of the president to all foreign ministers of EU countries. Our common position with Russia is that this problem should be discussed at the level of the negotiating process. Pridnestrovie has also invited the heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Moldova to visit informally Pridnestrovie to discuss in detail all aspects. We are now awaiting answers from our colleagues. As well as a whole set of other methods we use every day," said Ignatyev.
