Oleg Belyakov: ‘In 25 years the peacekeeping operation has not given cause for questioning its efficiency’

Tiraspol, 13 April. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The Joint Control Commission (JCC) considered about 15 issues during its regular meeting. During the procedural part, the commission approved the deputy head of the Bendery State Administration, Pavel Mikheyev, as Pridnestrovie's JCC expert and military attaché Sergey Smeanyuk as Ukraine's representative to the JCC. JCC members also heard and took into account reports by the Joint Military Command about the current situation in the Security Zone.

Pridnestrovie's JCC co-chair has underscored that today's meeting was productive, but, at the same time, it is rather difficult to talk about certain issues.

«We see today the process of lobbying certain trends, which have been reflected by the Moldovan side in the form of statements that Pridnestrovie is evading the implementation of the provisions of protocol 828 providing for the monitoring of the Security Zone in the event of an escalation. Moldova's statement reveals the whole essence of the problem, suggesting that monitoring should be conducted by international observers, i.e. neither the JCC nor the peacekeepers but some international observers," said Oleg Belyakov.

«The peacekeeping operation is coping with its functions and some tendentious issues relating to deploying some other categories [of observers] in the Security Zone] are inappropriate. «In 25 years the peacekeeping operation has not given cause for questioning its efficiency," added Belyakov.

The Moldovan side has once again prevented the issue of Moldova's tuberculosis prison in Bendery from putting on the agenda.

«The situation surrounding the prison requires discussion by the JCC. The Moldovan side, however, does not want to discuss the subject, considering it irrelevant," he stressed.
