Supreme Council to lift some privileges for retired state leaders

Tiraspol, 16 March. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Pridnestrovian MPs have considered amendments to the law «On guarantees to the persons who held the posts of President of the PMR, Vice President of the PMR, Chairperson of the Supreme Council of the PMR who retired from their positions and the members of their families».

«The daft law aims to decrease the amount of benefits for retired presidents, vice presidents and Supreme Council speakers," explained the bill's author, Oleg Vasilaty.

In particular, the draft law changes the procedure of using official cars, decreases the number of healthcare privileges, reduces the number of maintenance workers, abolishes benefits for the families of top public officials and so on.

The bill's authors believe that the current procedure for lifting the former top officials' immunities is too intricate and makes it almost impossible to bring these persons to account even after committing a grave crime.

«The very existence of a life-long immunity for the persons who held the posts of President of the PMR, Vice President of the PMR, Chairperson of the Supreme Council of the PMR and who retired from their positions arouses very negative attitude in the Pridnestrovian society, undermines the authority of public institutions and damages the international image of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic," an explanatory note to the draft law underscores.

It should be noted that earlier Oleg Khorzhan had presented an alternative bill. However, as a result of preference voting, the draft law by Alexander Korshunov and Oleg Vasilaty has been taken as a basis.

Lawmakers have passed the bill on first reading.
