Mikhail Khazin: "The trend in which Ukraine and Moldova were part of the anti-Russian project is fading away in our sight"

The Russian expert predicts "a great watershed" in the global economic and political system

Tiraspol, 6 February. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. According to Russian economist Mikhail Khazin, the contemporary world is at «the point of a great watershed».

The present model of economic development, based on consumption, has exhausted itself as it has resulted in the growth of loan indebtedness and inability to clear it, said the Russian expert during a lecture he delivered in Tiraspol today.

«We are on the way back from the financial to concrete economy. This is a key moment in the contemporary economic life. Only real assets must be taken into account as financial assets won't matter soon," said Khazin.

Meanwhile, he believes, the USA as the most significant centre of power in the contemporary world is seeking to retain the present economic model which in fact is the basis of their dominance. This accounts for a global rise in tensions: multiplying regional instability prevents new centres of the world's balance from emerging. According to him, the USA makes use of the «divide and rule» policy to maintain its political and financial dominance.

However, the expert feels sure that the crisis of financial economy will disable the West from using time-tested financial leverage in the geopolitical game. Mikhail Khazin cited today's collapse of the European Partnership as an example.

«The objective trends implying that from the point of view of that economic model Western Europe will not be able to finance Eastern European countries are having greater significance. In this way, these countries will start drifting from the west to the east," said the expert.

«The trend in which Ukraine and Moldova were part of the anti-Russian project is fading away in our sight," he underscored.

Under such circumstances, Khazin noted, Pridnestrovie should maintain its social stability and protect its economic potential. To achieve this, the country requires its own model of development which will be the expression of the state strategy. This strategy, according to the expert, may suggest various accents: the maintenance of social stability, economic re-equipment, survival, support for fundamental industries and so on. But it must be based on the objective trends in the world development, Khazin is assured.

The lecture by the Russian expert was well received by the audience, among whom were public officials, university teachers and students.

«The EU's current situation, according to estimates and forecasts by Mikhail Khazin, allows us to think that the vector of our foreign policy and economic development is correct, considering today's trends in the global economy. These trends should be taken into account," said the minister of economic development, Alevtina Slinchenko, following the lecture.

«It was interesting to hear his opinion on the global economic agenda. This really broadens the mind. It is very important we not only realise our domestic situation and the factors affecting it, but also the international stand, which, this way or another, influences Pridnestrovie," Dmitry Palamarchuk, a deputy foreign minister, commented on the lecture.

«The Russian expert has expressed his views on the essence of economy and its development in a very comprehensible way. Everything is actually interrelated in the world and this fact should be taken into account when choosing this or that economic paradigm of development," says a lecturer of Pridnestrovian State University, Nadezhda Smurova.
