OSCE comes out against a prohibition on the Russian television news in Moldova decisively

OSCE assessed two controversial Moldova's bills about the mass media concerning the prohibition on еру broadcast of Russian news, information and analytical programs

OSCE comes out against such bans decisively. According to OSCE, such measures are inefficient and will do only harm to Moldova, the NewsMaker reports.

The assessment of the Moldova's bills concerning the mass media was introduced on Monday, August 3 by the OSCE Representative on Media Freedom Dunya Miyatovich.

This document introduces two similar draft amendments at once to the Television and Radio Code, one of which was developed by the liberals (Corina Fusu's supervises this project), and the second — by the democrats and the Lib Dems (Sergey Syrbu supervises it).

«It is important to avoid any prohibitions of expression and information," it is told in the document.

Above all, similar bans will make a negative impact on pluralism, and it will also limit a range of news from Russia for the Russian and Russian-speaking minorities in Moldova considerably, it is noted in the document. OSCE also emphasizes that even though such bans don't violate any international obligations of Moldova, nevertheless such steps still will cause negative consequences.

However also, the fact that provisions amending the rules of the mass media work were taken away from the bill is noted as a positive fact in the OSCE document. It's important to remind that these provisions caused sharp public reaction of journalists and regulatory agencies who perceived them as an attempt to establish censorship.
