Experience shows that some citizens follow the unspoken tradition of remunerating customs officers with money in order to create favourable conditions for themselves and take unlawful advantage, the State Customs Committee (SCC) press service reports.
To this end, Pridnestrovie's customs checkpoints, customs clearing departments and on-duty information services have been equipped with posters warning citizens of the criminal liability for bribery.
In order to minimize corruption, form negative attitude towards bribery and encourage customs officials to counteract bribery attempts, the SCC has elaborated and has been successfully implementing a raft of measures aimed at revealing facts of customs officials' being incited to corrupt practices.
Only in 2014 the SCC law-enforcement units suppressed four attempts of bribing Pridnestrovie's customs officials.
Citizens need to know that in compliance with the standing instruction customs officials must inform the corresponding units of bribery attempts.
The State Customs Committee also reminds of the liability for such offences. Article 287 of the Penal Code of the PMR stipulates that a briber may not only be imposed a fine equal to thirtyfold the amount of the bribe, but also sentenced to up to seven years of imprisonment.
