FRAGMENT OF ROMAN PERIOD AMPHORA IN TIRASPOL FORTRESS

According to the archaeologists, it is not the first find confirming the existence of the ancient settlement on this territory

Tiraspol, June 10. / Novosti Pridnestrovya /. During the archaeological sites in the territory of St. Vladimir bastion of the Tiraspol Fortress the fragment of Roman period ceramic amphora was found. According to the experts, the artefact was found today during the exhumation of political repression victims remains of 30th years of the last century.

«It is a fragment of a Roman period amphora which was widespread from Don to the Danube in the II – III century AD. Most likely, it is made in one of the Greek colonies of Northern Black Sea Coast», – the senior research associate of the SPSU archaeology laboratory Igor Chetverikov explained.

According to him, fragments of antique ware have been repeatedly found in the Fortress that confirms a hypothesis of existence in this territory of the ancient settlement.

«The huge clay pithos (the Greek wine jar) and a whole amphora arrived in 1936 in the Odessa archaeological museum from Tiraspol with an accompanying note «It is found on the mountain». Having got accession numbers, these objects were lost during the Great Patriotic War. Also, ceramics have been found during 1993 and 2017. The fact that the objects which are directly relating to the Greek antique winemaking were found in Tiraspol on the height says that the settlement was here», – Igor Chetverikov emphasized.

Archaeological excavations in the territory of the Tiraspol Fortress are conducted the 3rd year in a row by forces of volunteers of Republican public organization «Successors of the Victory» and specialists of the SPSU research laboratory «Archaeology». This year pupils of Tiraspol Suvorov Military School take part it works too.
