71% of the PMR population call themselves Pridnestrovians

Polls have shown that civic identity prevails over national identity in the country

Tiraspol, October 2. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/.  Almost ¾ of the residents of our republic call themselves Pridnestrovians. The results of the public survey at a conference dedicated to Pridnestrovian identity were announced by the director of the Institute of Public Administration, Law and Social and Humanitarian Sciences Elena Bobkova.

“The results of the question revealed that today 71.6% consider themselves citizens of Pridnestrovie. 21% of respondents note their civic affiliation with the Russian Federation and to a lesser extent associate themselves with Ukraine and Moldova. In general, civic identity prevails over national identity in our country. The ideas of recognition, cohesion, consolidation, solidarity are very important for Pridnestrovians, although many probably do not clearly realize this,” the expert said.

At the same time, many of those surveyed consider themselves to be part of the Russian world – in terms of involvement in Russian culture and use of the Russian language.

At the same time, the Russian language is decisive in the self-identification of the republic's residents.

"56% of Pridnestrovians believe that the Russian language today is not a language of world communication, 43% believe that it is. At the same time, 68% express concern that at present Russian speech is influenced by colloquialisms, obscene language and is far from ideal," Elena Bobkova added.

According to the scientist, the Pridnestrovian people themselves represent an integral system with territorial, historical and socio-cultural ties.
