Andrey Safonov: Moldova is trying to cause economic collapse in Pridnestrovie

The political scientist spoke about the situation in Moldovan-Pridnestrovian relations

Tiraspol, June 18. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. What is happening in Moldovan-Pridnestrovian relations, what are the Moldovan authorities` true motives and what are the scenarios for the development of the situation - political expert Andrey Safonov expressed his opinion on these issues during his conversation with journalists at a meeting of the Expert Club at the State Institution Pridnestrovskaya Gazeta.

Andrey Safonov has been researching the Moldovan-Pridnestrovian conflict and the political situation in the region for more than 30 years. According to his observations, the current Government in Moldova is under direct external control and this leaves its mark on management decisions in economics and politics.

“The current leadership appears to have less responsibility than those in the past. Why? Because control on the part of Westerners and Romanians does not imply the presence of any serious initiative, other than that which is driven into a certain framework. Therefore, we can assume that, unlike the previous administrations of Chisinau, many leaders have no concern at all about what will happen next. As long as they are told to do this and that, they do it. The crisis will worsen, they will be told: we are departing, and that’s it. They will leave their place, board a plane and leave for foreign lands,” Safonov said.

The political scientist notes that in relations with Pridnestrovie, the current regime in Chisinau has chosen a strategy of economic strangulation without a clear understanding of the political consequences. According to him, even the country’s own economic interests have faded into the background for the Moldovan authorities, giving way to political priorities.

“In this case, it seems that the intention in the West among the puppeteers and owners of the current Chisinau regime is to strangle Pridnestrovie economically. We resist this and will keep resisting it,” Safonov noted, emphasizing that it is impossible to reach an agreement with Chisinau without the participation of powerful external pressure.

In the current situation, Chisinau is relying on stopping Pridnestrovian enterprises, as evidenced by problems in the work of electrical enterprises and attempts to take control of the supply of raw materials for the MMP.

“Westerners set the task of eliminating the Pridnestrovian statehood as such and the foreign policy orientation of Pridnestrovie. And as long as there is statehood, that means there is also an independent political orientation... In order to resolve the Pridnestrovian issue the way they understand it, there is no need to talk about some kind of autonomy, about something related to providing the population with rights. No. Their task is to provoke collapse, economic devastation, and then establish a strict occupation regime here, in which the population will simply run, as they say, taking with them what they can carry,” the political scientist says.

In these conditions, Safonov notes, it is important for Pridnestrovie to continue its foreign policy activity to solve the main task - to maintain peace. If the current leadership of Moldova manages to retain power after the upcoming elections, the pressure on Pridnestrovie may increase, the political scientist predicts.

“The military danger will increase. This is definitely going to happen if they win. They will attack Russia and the CIS more brazenly and clumsily with the aim of severing diplomatic and all other relations with Moscow and at the same time separating Moldova from the CIS. That is, politics will become more detached, more arrogant, more primitive,” Safonov says.
