Pridnestrovians demand that Moldova stop economic pressure

At the protest in Bendery, people chanted “Hands off Pridnestrovie!” and “No to the PMR Blockade!”

Bendery, January 18. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. A protest rally against economic pressure from Moldova was again held in Bendery. About 300 people gathered at the House of Culture named after P. Tkachenko, where meetings of the Joint Control Commission are held weekly. Representatives of Moldova take part in its work.

As last week, Pridnestrovian people protested against the stifling measures that Moldova unexpectedly applied from January 1, 2024 in the form of customs duties on Pridnestrovian enterprises. According to preliminary data, the damage to Pridnestrovie could amount to $16 million a year. One of the consequences of these measures will be an increase in prices.

“We demand from the leadership of Moldova: let’s communicate humanly, let’s resolve issues within the framework of existing international standards, let’s not deprive people of employment, the opportunity to work, earn a living, support their families,” Vladimir Emelyanov, Chairman of the United Council of Labor Collectives, said at the rally.

The protesters said that economic pressure from Moldova would lead to a deterioration in the overall economic situation in Pridnestrovie and would affect every Pridnestrovian family. The protesters chanted: “Hands off Pridnestrovie!” and “No to the PMR Blockade!”

“We have gathered to express our common civic position, and we appeal to the leadership of the Republic of Moldova, representatives of the Republic of Moldova, representatives of the guarantor. The PMR finds itself today in conditions in which there will be no normal life. The Federation of Trade Unions has always stood for the protection of legal rights and social guarantees of the republic. Our enterprises will be required to pay customs duties to the Republic of Moldova, which will entail irreversible consequences: enterprises will collapse and mass unemployment will begin,” representatives of the Federation of Trade Unions of the PMR said.

“As a representative of Moldovan youth, I hope that these words will not only be heard here, but also by gentlemen from the other bank of the Dniester. I and we all want to live in peace, we want to create social units, we want confidence in the future. Yet in this situation, it turns out that there is no such confidence,” the young man said.

The rally participants noted that Moldova is step by step introducing new measures of pressure on Pridnestrovian enterprises and the economy as a whole, and spoke out against the imposition of its position by Moldova.

“In the current conditions, we have only one thing left: to turn to the leadership of the Republic of Moldova and hope that common sense will prevail and the leadership of the Republic of Moldova will cancel the customs duties in force today,” one of the protest participants said.

Let us remind you that on January 11, a similar protest took place at the Moldovan-Pridnestrovian border on the way out of Bendery.
