Tiraspol, December 1. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Today, at a meeting with representatives of the Presidium of the Supreme Council, Russian Senator, member of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security Sergey Muratov commented on the recent statements of the elected President of Moldova Maya Sandu on the need to withdraw Russian peacekeepers from Pridnestrovie.
“I think this issue cannot be resolved without Pridnestrovian people`s opinion. There is peace on this land today. The presence of peacekeepers is intended to sustain peace,” Sergey Muratov stressed. As the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR Vitaly Ignatiev said in an interview with the Russia 24 TV channel, the conflict between Pridnestrovie and Moldova has not yet been resolved, therefore there is no reason to raise the issue of transforming the format of the peacekeeping mission or withdrawing Russian troops. Moreover, as the diplomat explained, the negotiations are in stagnation, while Chisinau does not fulfill the agreements on solving humanitarian problems reached in recent years.
Let us recall that Russia have stopped the armed aggression of Moldova against Pridnestrovie in July 1992. Prior to that, several conciliation commissions, including those with the participation of international representatives, tried to stop the war on the Dniester. The bloodshed only stopped with the Russian peacekeepers` arrival.
The peacekeeping operation under the auspices of the Russian Federation has been implemented in Pridnestrovie since 1992 on the basis of intergovernmental agreements. In addition to the Russian Federation, the parties to the conflict PMR and RM, as well as a group of military observers from Ukraine take part in it.
The peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation is formed from the Operational Group of Russian Forces in Pridnestrovie.
The Russian peacekeeping operation in Pridnestrovie is considered one of the most successful in history: hostilities have not resumed since 1992.
