Tiraspol, November 25. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Today is the Day of the Russian military peacekeeper. On this day in 1973, 25 Soviet soldiers as part of the UN peacekeeping forces went to the Middle East to extinguish the military involvement between Israel and Syria.
After the Soviet Union’s collapse, the Russian Federation continued to participate in the work of the UN, including those related to the activities of the military peacekeeping contingent. Russian peacekeepers took part in safeguarding of peace in countries and regions such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Pridnestrovie, Kosovo, Tajikistan, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chad, Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, Angola, Western Sahara, Middle East.
At the same time, Russia has a special responsibility for maintaining security in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) space. Russia stopped the war in Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The mission to Pridnestrovie is considered the most successful peacekeeping operation in history. In July 1992, Russia stopped the aggression of Moldova against the PMR. Since the establishment of peacekeeping posts, hostilities on the Dniester haven’t resumed. For 28 years in the Security Zone, as a result of armed confrontation, not a single civilian, not a single soldier of the peacekeeping forces has died.
The Russian military peacekeeping contingent bases in Pridnestrovie according to the 1992 agreement on the principles of peaceful settlement of the Moldovan-Pridnestrovian conflict, signed by the presidents of Russia and Moldova.
In Bendery, which in the summer of 1992 were attacked by the armed forces of Moldova, a monument to the peacekeeping soldiers, who stopped the war was built. The bridge across the Dniester, along which Russian soldiers arrived, was named the Bridge of Russian Peacekeepers.
