Why the town is called the northern capital of PMR and what is the height of the local Memorial of Military Glory

Tiraspol, November 21. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Today Rybnitsa celebrates a temple holiday and a Town Day. On this occasion, “Novosti Pridnestrovya” prepared a set of interesting facts about the northern capital of Pridnestrovie.

The exact date of the foundation of Rybnitsa is still unknown. The chronology starts from the first mention in the source. History books note the year 1628 with reference to the map of the Kingdom of Poland by Jacob Probst. However, local historians of the Pridnestrovian historico-geographical society argue, that the small town of Rybnitsa is mentioned in the “Act of the division of the land plots of the lords of Ostrog” in 1603. The document is stored in the archives of the city of Lviv.


Rybnitsa is called the northern capital. It was here that the idea of re-establishing the republic in Pridnestrovie was put forward. The first referendum in the Soviet Union was held here. In 1989, the residents of Rybnitsa declared for the Pridnestrovian Republic.


The Archangel Michael is depicted on the city’s coat of arms. The Archistrategos is considered the patron saint of Rybnitsa, the main temple is dedicated to him. That’s why a Town Day is celebrated on Mikhailov Day. He is also depicted on the coats of arms of Kiev and Brussels. Archangel Michael is one of the central figures of the coat of arms of the Russian Empire.


The Archangel Michael Cathedral is the largest Orthodox church in Pridnestrovie and Moldova. It can simultaneously insert 2000 parishioners. It took 15 years to build it.


Rybnitsa has one of the most magnificent Memorials of Military Glory in the region. Its height is 24 meters.


Industry has long been a feature of Rybnitsa. Back in 1898, a sugar and alcohol plant with the first electric generator in the region appeared here.


Rybnitsa is a town of metallurgists. One of the key pillar of the Pridnestrovian economy, the Moldavian Metallurgical Plant (MMP), operates here. Products of MMP are in demand on world markets.
