Tiraspol, July 22 ./Novosti Pridnestrovya/. On July 29, 1992, the Peacekeeping Forces of the Russian Federation entered the zone of the Moldo-Pridnestrovian conflict. One of the most successful peacekeeping missions in world history was launched. On the eve of the 28th anniversary of the beginning of the peacekeeping operation, the Pridnestrovian delegation in the JCC marked the significance of those historical events and commented on some aspects of current peacekeeping activities.
The governing body noted that today, like almost three decades ago, peacekeeping activities on the Dniester provide the warring parties with a real opportunity to look for mutually acceptable ways to resolve the conflict.
''The current situation on the banks of the Dniester is characterized primarily by the fact that Pridnestrovian citizens and the overwhelming majority of the Republic of Moldova citizens marked only on the positive side of the ongoing peacekeeping operation. The respectful and friendly attitude of the military personnel of the Joint Peacekeeping Forces towards the population living in the area of confrontation is the basis in maintaining peace and stability in the entire region'' - the Pridnestrovian delegation noted.
But it is not the only fact to make the current operation unique.
In accordance with the Agreement ''On Principles for the Peaceful Settlement of the Armed Conflict...'' dated July 21, 1992, as well as other basic documents published in its development, the competence of the peacekeeping operation bodies, does not include issues of political negotiations between Pridnestrovie and Moldova. According to the article 7 of the Agreement, the establishment of the Security Zone, the formation and functioning of the peacekeeping operation organs are an integral part of the peaceful political means conflict resolving process, but not the process itself.
As a part of a clearly established international legal basis, it does not allow us to steer the peacekeeping mission away from its true purpose for 28 years, the representatives of the governing body of the peacekeeping operation emphasize.
''It should also be noted that the many years of experience of the peacekeeping operation indicates the existence of unquestionable authority of the Russian Federation as a leading, guiding and connecting factor in the framework of the Joint Peacekeeping Forces, which are the main guarantor of maintaining peace and stability in the region,'' the commentary says.
