Activists of the Republican Party Obnovlenie Youth office made a bicycle race to one of the pillboxes behind the village Malayeshty of Grigoriopolsky district.
There it was organized a meeting with the military historian Alexey Rusanov for children. He in detail told not only about a Malayeshty pillbox but also about other similar constructions and the fortified areas both defensive strips of the Great Patriotic War and fighting at the beginning of the war.
The historian reminded that Tiraspol fortified area was a part of a huge «Stalin's Line» which passed from the Baltic to the Black Sea. This system of defensive works at the border of the USSR was created in the 1930th years. At the beginning of the war, the long-term weapon emplacements (LTWE) accepted some of the first blows of the German parts, Rusanov told.
He noted that the Tiraspol strengthened district held the fort about two weeks. Germans were transported through the Dniester on July 25, 1941, and till August 8 fights were going here. Then pillboxes were left by parts of the Red Army which left on the defense of Odessa – it was more important for strategic reasons.
Alexey Rusanov considers that pillboxes had also other value: «they, in fact, gave to the country ten years of peace as the opponent all this time thought of how to break through the fortified area». Some pillboxes of the Tiraspol fortified area, according to him, were used later, in 1944.
The pillbox where the meeting took place was constructed in 1932. Alexey Rusanov says that it is a serious object of an M-2 protection class with a thickness of walls more than a meter. There were three machine guns «Maxims», the garrison made 15 people. This object did not take part in fights, but on its example, it is possible to judge other similar constructions (more than four hundred along the Dniester).
In memory of the dead in days of the Great Patriotic War children lit candles at the pillbox and laid flowers on its concrete blocks, it is reported on the website of the party.
