Tiraspol, March, 23. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The head of state, Vadim Krasnoselski, speaking on the First Pridnestrovian TV channel, touched upon the topic of road accidents in the republic.
“I always tried to make sure that the incidents on the roads were fewer. Having become the President, I took the initiative that people driving a vehicle in a state of alcohol or drug intoxication, who are detained for the second time in a year, are subject to criminal penalties. And if a person dies as a result of such an accident, the court take a decision of a permanent driver`s license revocation. The term of imprisonment is also raised. A lot of people criticized this initiative for rigidity,” Vadim Krasnoselski said.
The head of state also stressed that thanks to this decision, people's lives will be protected. The mortality rate as a result of road accidents in Pridnestrovie is relatively small compared with neighboring countries, but nevertheless there are such accidents.
“In the future, it needs to be reduced to zero, so that no one dies on the road. While the punishment is severe, people still get behind the wheel while being drunk. I cannot understand this. They are not afraid of criminal liability. What else should be done? We will fight hard, we will save lives so that children would not become orphans because their father had a drink and killed himself and their mother. These tragedies must be avoided. I`d like to ask people to support this initiative,” the head of state said.
According to the President, the problems on the roads were not solved, even when the traffic police posts were removed.
“The police officer, on the contrary, serves as an important factor of stability. When a policeman is on duty at the entrance to the city, on central streets, he disciplines the drivers of vehicles. Let's analyze the statistics. If it does not improve, the posts will definitely need to be returned. Statistics indicate a slight increase in the number of accidents and, most negatively, accidents occurred under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
“When it comes to people`s lives, we must think how to eliminate the negative factor, how to ensure safety. The society and the state must fight for lives, both legally and practically,” Vadim Krasnoselski stressed.
