Tiraspol, November, 23. / Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Alexander Suvorov is one of the greatest commanders in Russian and world history. Suvorov played a great role in the history of Pridnestrovie: he released this territory from the Turkish oppression and founded Tiraspol - the capital of the Republic.

This day 38 years ago in the heart of Tiraspol one of the main symbols of our Republic - the monument to Alexander Suvorov - was open. The nine-meter bronze monument was erected by sculptors Vladimir and Valentin Artamonov on the project of the architects Druzhinin and Chistyakov. It is truly considered to be one of the best monuments to the commander in all the former USSR territory. Work of brothers Artamonov was awarded the sculptor Evgeny Vuchetich gold medal.

Let's note that Alexander Suvorov was born on November 24, 1729, in Moscow. His father, Vasily Ivanovich Suvorov, the general-in-chief and senator, was the author of the first Russian military dictionary. His mother, Avdotya Fyodorovna née Manukova, was the daughter of Fedosey Manukov.  Alexander Suvorov spent the childhood in a fatherly manner in the village. As a boy, Suvorov was a sickly child and his father assumed he would work in civil service as an adult. However, Alexander proved to be an excellent learner and with his father's vast library devoted himself to intense study of military history, strategy, tactics, avidly studying mathematics, history, philosophy.

When Alexander was 12 his father was persuaded to allow him to pursue the career of his choice. Suvorov entered the army in 1748 and served in the Semyonovsky Life Guard Regiment for six years. During this period he continued his studies attending classes at Cadet Corps of Land Forces, learned several foreign languages (Suvorov knew eight languages).

Having begun the service the musketeer of the Semenovsky Regiment, Alexander Suvorov managed to become one of five generalissimos of the Russian army. From the very beginning of his military way, being the young officer, Suvorov showed important qualities for the future commander: energy, determination, ability to find quickly and to estimate vulnerability of the enemy and to attack immediately. After the significant for Pridnestrovie victory of the Russian Empire in the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792 during which Suvorov took unapproachable Turkish fortress Izmail the treaty of Jassy fixed Russian new territorial acquisitions: the border between Russia and Turkey was established down the river Dniester.

In order to strengthen new frontiers, Catherine II decided to create a chain of fortresses across the Dniester. Under the leadership of Alexander Suvorov "The expedition of the structure of the southern fortresses" was established.

In 1792 with Suvorov's direct participation on the left coast of the Dniester (on the place of burned by Turks village Sukley) the Median fortress was established. To the east of fortress appeared a settlement which since 1795 has become the city of Tiraspol and the centre of the same name district which entered Novorossiysk, later renamed in Kherson province of the Russian Empire.

Today the image of the great Russian commander is represented on the state awards of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, coins and banknotes, signs of post-payment and also products of the enterprises of Pridnestrovie. The squares and streets in Tiraspol and Bendery are also named by Alexander Suvorov.
