Gubarev: Russia will not reconsider its stance on the peacekeeping forces in the region

Russia's ambassador at large said that the peacekeeping mandate would be valid until the settlement of the Moldo-Pridnestrovian conflict

Tiraspol, 23 May. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The peacekeeping mandate will be valid until the settlement of the Moldo-Pridnestrovian conflict, Russia's ambassador at large Sergey Gubarev told journalists after his meeting with Supreme Council members.

The Russian diplomat commented on Moldova’s constitutional court's decision recognising Pridnestrovie — the region Kishinev considers to be its integral part without any political, historical and moral grounds — as the territory occupied by the Russian troops.

«We have recently become accustomed to hearing such definitions about ourselves. But there is a good proverb: sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me. Russia had made certain commitments within the joint peacekeeping operation in Pridnestrovie. We believe that its mandate would expire only after political agreements have been reached to resolve the problem. Before that, neither I nor our leadership sees any reason to reconsider our stance on the peacekeeping forces in the region," explained Gubarev.

The Russian ambassador also noted the moment had come to sort out the situation in the region where Moldova and Ukraine unilaterally make decisions against Pridnestrovie.

«All this does not seem to improve the situation in the region. Such decisions lead to an increase in tension, in negative implications. And the fact that we are denied the opportunity to discuss it in public only aggravates the situation. Besides, the fundamental documents of our negotiating process in the «5+2» format warn against unilateral actions that may worsen the partner's position. We've seen a blatant violation of this principle so far, and it is time we dealt with this situation," said Gubarev.
