Public Chamber drafting an appeal to Russian colleagues

The document will focus on Moldova's plans to organise joint control at Ukraine's Kuchurgan–Pervomaysk border crossing and "unprecedented attacks by Moldova's judicial authorities against the peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation"

Tiraspol, 16 May. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. To assist in overcoming the next spiral of economic and humanitarian blockade imposed on Pridnestrovie by Moldova, as well as in responding to the unprecedented attacks of Moldova's judicial authorities against Russia's peacekeeping contingent stationed in the PMR — these are the requests Pridnestrovie's Public Chamber is going to submit to their Russian Colleagues.

The situation around our republic has recently been exacerbated, and this is done with the assistance of our neighbours — Moldova and Ukraine. One of the latest attempts to launch another round of the economic and humanitarian blockade of Pridnestrovie is the establishment by Moldova of joint control over the Pridnestrovian-Ukrianian border at the Pervomaysk-Kuchurgan border crossing. If these «good-neighbourly» plans are implemented, Pridnestrovie's budget will lose up to $40 million annually. Besides, they may hinder the development of individual and small businesses.

«For the time being, the Moldovan authorities are already blocking the import of cargoes and food products subject to veterinary and phytosanitary control, which poses a direct threat to the food security of the PMR. This will inevitably lead to increased conflict between Moldova and the PMR with negative implications in the Central European region," says the appeal.

«This decision is absolutely inconsistent with the negotiating process as Pridnestrovie's stance has not been taken into account. Moreover, in addition to this, Moldova is now announcing the establishment of 13 more joint customs post at the Pridnestrovian-Ukrainian border, which is extremely unacceptable. We are talking about non-compliance with the international principles of free movement, which will also bring problems to our citizens, especially those with Russian passports. And the imprudentness of all these issues, their political engagement, may lead to a serious knot of problems. And since we are talking about Russian citizens, it is natural to appeal to the Public Chamber [of Russia] to seek its support in preventing this process," said the deputy chair of the PMR's Public Chamber, Yury Cheban.

Pridnestrovian chamber members also intend to draw the attention of their Russian colleagues to the decision of Moldova's constitutional court that officially rejects the internationally recognised peacekeeping format.

«We emphasise it in our appeal because this attack is not only aimed against Pridnestrovie, but to a greater degree against Russia," explained Cheban.

On 4 June 2015 the public chambers of Russia and the PMR signed a memorandum of mutual understanding and cooperation.
