Tiraspol, 9 June. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The cause of the crisis, its current progress and possible ways of recovery were talked about at today's meeting of the president with the teaching staffs and students of vocation education institutions. First of all, the president explained why the country began to experience the lack of foreign currency.
«First, our exports are dropping, as well as tax payments, our citizens' transfers from abroad. Another factor is our electric power which we supply to Moldova and which also went down in price, and earnings also went down," he said.
The situation got further aggravated by the population's increased demand for foreign currency (twice as much as in 2014) and its large-scale export to Ukraine and Moldova.
Yevgeny Shevchuk underscored that the worsening of the economic situation was forecast back the start of the year at State and Security Council meetings based on the available information, but «unfortunately, these arguments were not understood due to some, probably, political reasons.»
The president reminded the audience that our rouble's exchange rate had been maintained for four years amid the devaluation of national currencies in Moldova and Ukraine. But today we have run of such resources. Therefore, in March 2016 it was proposed to devalue the rouble, to which the Supreme Council strongly objected.
«Formally, there are no grounds to change it, but in real life the exchange rate is quite different. On such issues as exchange rate formation, budget formation, in my view, it is necessary to make balanced decisions based on professional approaches. Otherwise, it may occur that behind calculations we do not see what is going on in real life," said Yevgeny Shevchuk, adding that it is no good having both official and unofficial exchange rates.
The head of state also mentioned that in compliance with the present constitution, exchange rate policy lies within the PRB and Supreme Council's jurisdiction and noted that such decisions should be made without any political bias.
«Using the lack of foreign currency in order to say that someone is bad or good is not the proper way of achieving positive goals. We should make specific decisions to radically improve the situation," concluded the president.
