Supreme Council extends parliamentary immunity

1 / 1

Tiraspol, 20 April. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Today, a plenary session of the Supreme Council has adopted on first reading constitutional amendments extending parliamentary privilege. Earlier, a draft law restricting local councillors' immunity was submitted to the parliament by the prosecutor. MPs rejected it and proposed their own bill drafted «in compliance with the ruling made by the Constitutional Court».

According to the government's plenipotentiary, Alexander Kisnichan, the amendments proposed by lawmakers considerably increase deputy immunity, and, therefore, they cannot be adopted like this.

«The proposed variant will prevent law enforcers from taking any actions in case a people's deputy is detained at a crime scene, as well as interrogating an MP without the Supreme Council's consent," underscored Kisnichan.

The same opinion is held by the PMR's prosecutor, Alexander Deli, and the minister of justice, Olga Zvarych.

The minister of justice expressed bewilderment at life-long immunity proposed in the draft.

However, the bill has passed its first reading.
