Tiraspol, 29 January. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Despite a number of negative factors, the country's criminal situation remains under control, said President Yevgeny Shevchuk at today's Interior Ministry panel. The president evaluated the ministry's performance last year as satisfactory, adding, however, that almost 800 servicemen have been laid off in the past three years.

The head of state underscored that events in the neighbouring states are causing additional difficulties for law enforcement workers, but at the same time on key indicators Pridnestrovie's situation is better than in Moldova and Ukraine.

Among the problems Yevgeny Shevchuk highlighted the ongoing staff scarcity in a number of units, such as patrol service, district inspectors' service, criminal investigation department, etc.

Besides, according to the president, the existing legislation does not fully meet today's realities.

«Under the current circumstances we certainly need a new law 'On militsiya', which would extend the powers of law enforcement workers," he said, adding that it is necessary to determine a methodological, staff, financial and technical potential so that law enforcers could efficiently fulfil their tasks.

«Everyone likes to pay attention to the results and ask questions, but nobody knows how to achieve these results under the conditions the Interior Ministry is in. It is understood that without addressing issues of material incentive some ministry units, such as patrol service and criminal investigation department, cannot be fully staffed. Of course, we should be looking for the happy medium between powers, obligations and responsibility," underscored Yevgeny Shevchuk.

In conclusion, the president thanked the ministry's personnel for their work and decorated especially distinguished officers.
