Pridnestrovie's acting foreign minister, Vitaliy Ignatyev, met the UN delegation led by Catalina Devandas Aguilar, special rapporteur on the rights of
persons with disabilities.
As was noted by Vitaliy Ignatyev during the meeting, today there are about 24,000 people with disabilities, and the government gives serious consideration to protecting the interests of this category of citizens.
«We have placed the emphasis on the fact that, unfortunately, Pridnestrovie is under complex pressure, which creates negative social and economic losses and which does not allow us to fully safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities in Pridnestrovie. We have expressed our readiness to cooperate with our international partners at multiple levels. Moreover, we have already had a serious positive experience, including the work of Mr Hamarberg's mission. I suppose this cooperation will assume practical follow-up. Some recommendations will be prepared, and I think we'll be able to properly implement them together with the UN," said Vitaliy Ignatyev.
According to Catalina Devandas Aguilar, her main goal as special rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities is providing technical assistance, as well as acquiring information not only on the progress in this sphere but also on the existing difficulties and problems.
«Today we have only had a primary discussion, and I hope we will be able to discuss our further activities aimed at promoting assistance to people with disabilities," said Catalina Devandas Aguilar.
In the course of the assessment mission the UN delegation will visit a number of institutions, including Bendery's day care centre for children with disabilities, to see the progress in safeguarding the rights and interests of people with disabilities in the republic.
