A memorial complex in his honour has been unveiled today
The event is dated to the forthcoming celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory and 85th anniversary of the Soviet Union's airborne troops.
The participants of the meeting, devoted to the unveiling of the memorial complex in the honour of Vasiliy Margelov, recalled that his name was closely connected with the history of the airborne troops formation. Army General Margelov was called one of the world's most talented commanders. During the Great Patriotic War he commanded rifle units, participated in the forced crossing of the Dnieper and liberation of Kherson. In 1944, being a major general, Hero of the USSR, commander of the 49th Guards Rifle Division, he participated in the Iasi-Kishinev operation, liberating Bendery from the Nazi invaders.
The hero was awarded 60 medals and orders for his feats. It is Vasily Margelov who has turned the airborne troops into the Armed Forces' elite.
The chairman of the government, Tatyana Turanskaya has congratulated the residents of Bendery on the city's 606th anniversary, which is celebrated today, and called the city "modern and hospitable".
"Vasily Margelov is a legendary man. The unveiling of the monument in his honour is a great occasion not only for the Paratroopers' Union of Pridnestrovie, but also for many citizens in our republic. The general went through the Great Patriotic War from start to finish, approved himself a brave and experienced commander and became the Hero of the Soviet Union. Many generations were shaped by the example of courage and selfless service he had set. There are monuments in his honour in many cities in Russia. It is a great honour that the memory of the winged chivalry's founder has been immortalised in Bendery," underscored Tatyana Turanskaya.
"He was a legendary man, who brought up many generations of soldiers always ready to defend their Mothewrland," said Yuri Gervazyuk, the head of Bendery's state administration.
The memorial complex includes a monument to Vasily Margelov, a memorable plate with the names of the Ryazan Paratroopers' Military School's cadets who fell in the performance of duty, and a memorable plate from grateful residents of Bendery.
The monument to Vasily Margelov has been erected on the initiative of Bendery's Paratroopers' Union. The memorial complex was designed by Viktor Pustoykin, the head of Bendery's Artistic College, pro-rector of the Pridnestrovian State Institute of Arts (PSIA). The monument and memorable plates were sculpted by Pavel Zhukov, an Artistic College instructor. Stone working was performed by the sculptor Grigory Sultan.
The honourable right to unveil the monument was granted to Yuri Gervazyuk, the head of Bendery, and Colonel of the Guards Anatoly Kuznetsov. The memorial complex was consecrated by Archbishop of Tiraspol and Dubossary Savva.
"Vasily Margelov put his heart, experience and commander’s talent into the airborne troops. He managed to turn the airborne troops into an elite, bring up and train the soldiers for whom there were no impossible missions. We all remember that it was the paratroopers who first entered the territory of Pridnestrovie on the peacekeeping mission,"said the head of the Russian peacekeeping military contingent, Col. Valery Blizhenskiy.
"This monument will be a symbol of intergenerational continuity. We remember and will never forget Vasily Margelov," underscored Colonel of the Guards Anatoly Kuznetsov, the head of Bendery's Paratroopers' Union.
The meeting was followed by a one-minute silence and flower-laying ceremony.
