The first Slobodzeya mention was made on Friedrich Bauer’s «Russian battles General map». As the exact date of foundation is unknown, the town 250-th anniversary is celebrated in this year. According to «Historical chronological description of Kherson and Tauride bishopric churches» earlier the settlement name was Ruf.
The historian’s researchers showed that in XVIII century the different nation’s representatives had lived there. The Slobodzeya name is connected to the word «slobda» which means the place where people as a folk-free and have to pay no taxes (then were serfdom law times).
Since the end of XVIII century the two twins-villages existed: Russian Slobodzeya and Moldavian Slobodzeya.
In 1789 the Black see Cossack army «kosh» was moved from Berezan creek to Slobodzeya. The army government, treasury and stamp located there until the August 1792.
By 1863 Slobodzeya was one of the biggest settlements in Tiraspol district of Kherson province. There were 648 courts; 5000 citizens (Moldavians and Great Russians); two orthodox churches; school; market, which worked twice a week; trade points and bank which was founded in 1848.
The Russian and Moldavian Slobodzeya parts unification was in 1972. After that Slobodzeya became urban-type settlement.
On June 12, 2002 by the PMR Supreme Council decision Slobodzeya became a city.
A town day Russian and Moldavian parts celebrates on different holy days: the Russian part on August 28 (on The Dormition of the Mother of God), the Moldavian one on November 21 (on Archangel Michael day).
In this year for the first time the celebration is held on September 21. It is coincided to the arch opening which located in the Slobodzeya center.
