DAY OF SLAVIC WRITING AND CULTURE WAS CELEBRATED IN TIRASPOL

There were celebrations which were accompanied by exhibitions, dances and poetry.

Tiraspol, May, 24. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. In Pridnestrovie the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture is celebrated annually. Clergymen, representatives of culture and art, public figures, and younger generation become regular guests of events devoted to the holiday. Today, this holiday was celebrated in the park of the Tiraspol Central City Library named after A.S. Pushkin.

About 250 schoolchildren and kindergartners, as well as invited guests, gathered to hear about the birth of typography in Russia, to get acquainted with publications telling about the feat of the great Russian enlighteners Cyril and Methodius, and also to enjoy the concert program.

Presentations were made by the Priest Anatoly, a cleric of the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, noting that that day was a festive day for the entire Slavic world.

“Our ancestors were aware that without knowledge and language, a person is not able to form himself as a person. At the end of the 9th century, the brothers Cyril and Methodius were recognized by the church as saints for their services,” the priest noted.

The chairman of the Union of Russian Communities, Viorika Kokhtareva, also spoke about the significance of the holiday uniting all Slavic peoples.

“We all have one Slavic culture based on the Cyrillic alphabet. It was once donated by the brothers Cyril and Methodius, thus laying the foundation of the Slavic civilization. So let's remember and honor our traditions and culture,” she said.

In Russia, the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture has been celebrated since 1986, and it began to be celebrated in Pridnestrovie in 1990. It is symbolic that the Soviet and Russian sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov created a monument to Slavic enlighteners in Moscow, in Tiraspol he became the author of A.S. Pushkin sculpture, decorating the square of the metropolitan library.

Today, there are many book and art exhibitions, as well as exhibitions of decorative and applied art. Representative of the Central City Library Elena Latyntseva told about one of them.

“I work with people with disabilities. These are children, teenagers, and pensioners - completely different age. Besides the fact that they read a lot, they also cross-stitch, bead, create jewelry and various crafts which everyone can get acquainted with,” the librarian says.

The event continued with performances by creative teams of Culture Department.
