Tiraspol, August 29. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Pridnestrovie has long been observing the fate of Gagauzia as part of Moldova and oversees that the Gagauz autonomy is gradually turning into a part of a unitary state, losing its rights.
This was stated by the PMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky at a press conference dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.
“It’s no doubt, this cannot but alarms us, we are drawing the appropriate conclusions,” the head of state emphasized. According to Vadim Krasnoselsky, if we are talking about building some kind of a common state called Moldova, it should be exclusively federal or confederative. “Otherwise, it won’t function,” the PMR President is convinced.
It should be reminded, that Gagauzia, which has been an autonomous region within Moldova since the year of 1994, has been facing pressure from the Moldovan authorities for many years. This pressure has intensified since the Action and Solidarity Party came to power in 2021. Chisinau is depriving various powers from the autonomy related to the electoral process, the appointment of judges and prosecutors, the statistical bodies working, and so on.
In August 2025, the current bashkan of Gagauzia, Eugenia Gutsul, was sentenced to 7 years in prison. She considers her criminal case fabricated and politically motivated.
