Artem Turov: Hotheads who are exploiting the issue of Russian peacekeepers` withdrawal are irresponsible politicians

Tiraspol, August 27. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Artem Turov commented on the situation around the peacekeeping mission in Pridnestrovie, noting that it was ongoing for thirty years and not a single shot has been made on the Dniester, not a single life has been cut short during this time.

“The hotheads who constantly exploit this issue on the other bank of the Dniester are irresponsible and frivolous politicians,” the Russian deputy stressed. “How can the peacekeepers be withdrawn if the issue has not been resolved, if only thanks to the peacekeepers on both banks of the Dniester, families live in peace and children are born?”

The peacekeeping operation under the auspices of the Russian Federation has been implemented in Pridnestrovie since 1992 on the basis of interstate agreements. It is recognized as one of the most successful in history: since 1992, hostilities have not resumed. In addition to the Russian Federation, the parties to the conflict (which did not exist before) - Pridnestrovie and Moldova, as well as a group of military observers from Ukraine take part in it. The peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation is formed from the Operational Group of Russian Forces in Pridnestrovie. According to the existing agreements, the peacekeeping operation in Pridnestrovie should continue until the complete settlement of the Moldovan-Pridnestrovian conflict.

From time to time, Moldovan politicians demand the withdrawal of the OGRF from Pridnestrovie and demand the replacement of the Russian peacekeeping mission with an international civilian one. But any attempts to destroy the existing peace guarantee mechanism can lead to a Moldovan-Pridnestrovian conflict rollback to the situation of the early 90s. Due to the unsettled state and legal relations between Pridnestrovie and Moldova, there is no comprehensive agreement that would exclude the possibility of resuming direct military confrontation.
