Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation: Calls for the peacekeeping mission elimination rise tension

Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Viktor Vodolatsky commented on Maya Sandu`s statements

The Russian peacekeepers have proven their effectiveness in Pridnestrovie, and there is no reason to cut this mission on the Dniester short. Calls for the mission elimination only rise tension in relations between the two banks of the Dniester. This is how the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Viktor Vodolatsky commented on the words of the elected President of Moldova Maya Sandu about the need to withdraw Russian peacekeepers from Pridnestrovie.

“If this speech was written by Western curators to unleash tensions in the region, then this does not bode well for the inhabitants of Pridnestrovie. We hope that behind these speeches there is no desire to close borders, prohibit exports or other similar measures. Such statements can provoke civil unrest, protests, another round of social instability,” the Deputy said in an interview with Sputnik Moldova.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation believes that Maya Sandu`s statements on the peacekeepers are aimed at undermining the efforts for a peaceful settlement of the Moldovan-Pridnestrovian conflict.

Let us recall that Russia have stopped the armed aggression of Moldova against Pridnestrovie in July 1992. Prior to that, several conciliation commissions, including those with the participation of international representatives, tried to stop the war on the Dniester. The bloodshed only stopped with the arrival of the Russian peacekeepers.

The peacekeeping operation under the auspices of the Russian Federation has been implemented in Pridnestrovie since 1992 on the basis of intergovernmental agreements. In addition to the Russian Federation, the parties to the conflict PMR and RM, as well as a group of military observers from Ukraine take part in it. The peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation is formed from the Operational Group of Russian Forces in Pridnestrovie.

The Russian peacekeeping operation in Pridnestrovie is considered one of the most successful in history: hostilities have not been resumed since 1992.
