Tiraspol, June 20. / Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Today at the Station Square in Tiraspol there took place the ceremonial opening of the commemorative plaque devoted to the Ukrainian people who had helped the Pridnestrovians in the period of the armed aggression of the Republic of Moldova in 1992.
«This day I happened to be the refugee's coordinator of the headquarters in Odessa region. I can voice for the first time today the number of those who were registered as refugees in Ukraine. According to official figures, 117 thousand 800 refugees from Pridnestrovie received help in Ukrainian», – the Honorary Chairman of the Union of Ukrainians in Pridnestrovie Leonid Tkachuk told.
In the territory of the Odessa region the headquarters which recorded and coordinated accommodation of refugees were created. People were sent to sanatoria, recreation facilities, boarding schools. Leonid Tkachuk notes: «Everyone was placed and provided with medical attendance. Those heavy for Ukraine days, it has provided help and paid grants to nearly 118 thousand people».
In 1992 the Ukrainian people met requirements of those who were forced to run. They provided people with water, food, clothes and a roof over the head. Those refugees who had no relatives in Ukraine received help from absolutely strangers.
«Though the majority also has relatives in Ukraine, in Bendery the Moldavian population prevails, respectively, they had no place to run. I think that Ukraine deserved this honour roll for a contribution which it had made. History always repeats. This board is a reminder to the next generations», – the head of the Ukrainian centre «Sotrudnichestvo» Vladimir Fomenko noted.
The commemorative plaque was created at the initiative of the First Head of the state Igor Smirnov and the current President of the PMR Vadim Krasnoselsky. Now on a facade of the Tiraspol Station, two memorable plates will be placed: to women who carried out a blockade on the railroad, and to the Ukrainian people.
