Our guys in Sochi: World Festival of Youth and Students begins

Novosti Pridnestrovie's coverage of the Pridnestrovian delegation staying in Sochi in text, photos and videos

Tiraspol, 15 October. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The World Festival of Youth and Students starts in Russia's Sochi. Thousands of young people from over 180 countries have arrived here to share ideas, emotions and outlooks. This festival continues to unite civilisations — the clusters of cultures, world outlook systems and lifestyles are intertwined here in a colourful ornament symbolising peace, respect for people and friendship of peoples.

The prelude to it was an international carnival parade of students, which took place in Moscow the previous day. The opening ceremony will be held today, 15 October, in Sochi's Great Ice Palace.

The Pridnestrovians are also preparing to take part in it. The delegation of our country, which consists of about a hundred people, arrived in the Olympic Park of Sochi on 14 October. Our guys were put up in a cosy hotel, after which the accreditation ceremony has begun. Though rather long, it is drawing to a close. A Novosti Pridnestrovya reporter could meet the young Pridnestrovians, festival participants, and find out how they were doing.

Sochi has always been associated with summer and palm trees. Everyone who comes here expects to see a clear blue sky and a glimmer of the southern sun in the Black Sea. Even in mid-October, Sochi beaches are full of people. The water temperature, they say, is +20-25 °C. However, it is right at the start of the festival that the rain is coming down with a vengeance.

Though a surprise, the cloudy and rainy weather has not become a cause for autumn sadness — festival participants are positive, anticipating future events of the festival, which is held in Russia and in the USSR for the third time.

The Pridnestrovians were not at all embarrassed, by the way, on seeing the bad weather at the Sochi airport. On the contrary, it seemed that the Pridnestrovian sun, thanks to which our wines and brandies inspire the prolonged delight, became even brighter in their hearts. For example, this is how the journalist of the Pridnestrovian TV company Denis Kirilov has commented the arrival of our delegation to Sochi:

"The same opinion is shared by the rest members of our delegation. During the shooting of a group photo, anyway, the guys were in high spirits.

And here's the photo:

Our delegation was met by volunteers, wearing the blue colours of peace. They are all friendly and responsive, speak various languages. There are about 5,000 of them here — all of them are young, energetic and specially trained for the festival. Volunteers know everything — where a place is situated, what is situated in this place and how to get there. If a participant has a problem, volunteers will solve it.

They met our guys at the airport and accompanied them to a big, comfortable bus which drove the delegation to a hotel. By the way, such buses with the festival logo are called shuttles — they serve to commute between hotels and festival venues.

The delegation settled at the Alexandrovsky Garden Hotel together with guests from Cuba, Argentina and several Russian regions. Athletes lived in these nice campuses during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

While settling, our guys could make friends with their neighbours. Merry:

... and creative:

The two-, three- and four-bed rooms, according to the members of our delegation, are cosy and well-equipped.

Special outfit has been prepared for all festival participants, which the Pridnestrovians will be able to wear along with their original uniform, made by domestic fashion designers.

"This artistic product has become one of the attractive calling cards of the Pridnestrovian delegation. We also have individual badges and bracelets. We will also stretch our banners at the opening ceremony," says one of the heads of the Pridnestrovian delegation, deputy foreign minister Alexander Stetsyuk.

Waiting for the festival to begin and hiding from the rain, which has become even stronger, our guys are spending the first evening in the campus hall, singing to the guitar. The repertoire is cheerful and life-affirming, as always.

"The atmosphere in our group is energetic and bright. Despite the weather, the kids are in high spirits and are under the impression of the beauties of Sochi. They are looking forward to the active phase of the event," said Stretsyuk.

The young choreographer from Rybnitsa, Maria Kravchuk, is inspired by the upcoming events.

"I'm planning to learn as much as possible, to exchange experiences, to move forward. This world festival is very helpful for personal growth, and everyone dreams to get here," says Maria.

Painting teacher Marina Zaytseva will represent our country in cultural events.

"We are organising a calling card presentation of Pridnestrovie, which will show the culture of our people," she says.

Public figure and law student Sergey Romanov is going to take part in scientific and discussion programmes.

"I'm very much interested in educational programmes, as well as in political discussion forums. Meeting Sergey Lavrov at the least. We have met Brazilians today, our Abkhaz brothers, guys from Donetsk and Lugansk. We want to show that Pridnestrovie is not a closed region but open to new contacts and projects," explains Sergey.

In the meantime, the Main Media Centre has already become the host of the first exhibitions, which started on 14 October.

Thus, for example, YOUTH EXPO has launched a project encompassing three main expositions: Russian regions; new technologies and innovations; history and culture. Here you can see innovations by young Russian specialists in various scientific fields. For example, a manned robot called Ruslan.

Russian Regions present an excellent selection of the country's cultural characteristics, which are as multifaceted as the Eurasian soul. It is reported that prominent athletes, journalists and musicians will take part in panel meetings and hold artistic meetings with festival participants.

Starting next week, each day will be dedicated to one of the planet regions — America, Russia, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, Europe. Discussion, scientific and educational forums are set to be held, for example,  an economy for future development,  future industry, health ecology, future technologies, global policies, etc. Among festival speakers are heads of the leading industrial companies, social, political and youth organisations, businessmen, etc.

Challenging cultural and sports programmes — a jazz festival, a new music festival, a festival of national cultures, a cinema lab, an interactive library and various sports events — are just a small part of what will happen in Sochi's Olympic Park during the festival.

Alexander Koretsky.
